Teeth Whitening

Our procedure is the safest, most researched, most effective and longest lasting method for tooth whitening. It is the most requested dental procedure from patients.

  • brightens your smile
  • non-destructive
  • can be used as an oral antiseptic (kills bacteria causing tooth decay and gum disease)
  • NO damaging effects to your teeth and gums after whitening

The procedure

If you are suitable, moulds are taken to create custom whitening trays (see below). These take two weeks to make and are specifically designed to minimise gel wastage and minimise potential side-effects. Tooth whitening gel will be prescribed based on your goals and the degree of staining/discolouration. This gel is inserted into the trays and worn 2 hours daily for 2 weeks. The gel breaks down the staining on and within the tooth surface.

What you should know

  • Tooth whitening is more cost effective long term than regular stain removal visits.
  • The procedure is suitable for all patients of ALL ages.
  • Whitening has other health benefits: improved oral hygiene & improved gums!
  • 99% of teeth will whiten. If your teeth do not change at all then we shall give you a refund.
  • Existing restorations i.e. fillings/crowns/veneers will not change colour and may need replacing for proper colour-matching after treatment. (Best to return for an assessment when you are happy with the colour of the teeth)
  • 2/3rd’s of patients will experience sensitivity during treatment  (lasts 1-4 weeks after whitening is completed). Our instructions must be carefully followed for the best results and to reduce tooth sensitivity.
  • All patients do not respond at the same rate to whitening. It can take days-months to achieve the desired result.
  • You can control how white your teeth go. You can whiten the teeth until you are happy with the colour.
  • Generally you can whiten to the colour of the whites of your eyes.
  • Deep yellow stains can be considerably lightened; brown and grey stains are more difficult to bleach.
  • Alternative treatments include:  Microabrasion/Veneers/Crowns. Most of these are more destructive and are considerably more expensive in terms of time and money. Nethertheless these options are still available should the whitening not be successful (very rare).
  • You can whiten continuously on weekends replenishing the gel every 2 hours to get a quicker result. However, this may result in more tooth sensitivity.
  • You can whiten top teeth before bottom ones and see the change.

Longevity & Maintenance:

  • Studies show that 80% of patients are happy with results after 2 years. You may wish to have a ‘booster’ to ‘top-up’ your whitened teeth. Make an appointment and we shall prescribe some more gel accordingly. There is an additional cost for this.
