Frequently Asked Questions

Adults

  • How often should I have dental check ups? In most cases checkups are advised every 6 months to catch dental disease early. Your dentist at Gatton Dental will assess your risk of tooth decay and gum disease and then make a recommendation. In some cases patients with no fillings and a great diet can be seen every 18-24months.
  • How often do I need x-rays and why? At Gatton Dental we only take xrays when clinically needed (ie. when they are likely to provide a benefit to you). They are used to check the areas in between your teeth that the dentist cannot see for holes, check under your old fillings to ensure there is no decay and assess the severity of gum disease should you have it. Several health bodies have created guidelines for taking Xrays and we follow the NICE guidelines in the UK. These guidelines have been around for decades and are based on studies!
  • How do I look after my teeth and gums? At Gatton Dental we will check the condition of your teeth and gums, check the bacteria levels in the mouth and assess your brushing habits. We will then make recommendations accordingly to ensure that the bacteria levels in the mouth are as low as possible. Your diet is very important in looking after your teeth as well. Great brushing but a poor diet (too many fizzy drinks etc) can still mean you get decay in your teeth. Dentists at Gatton Dental will assess your diet and advise you of any harmful habits.
  • Why do I need a clean and polish? Dental cleaning removes harmful bacteria that cause decay and gum disease. Professional dental cleaning removed the bacteria from the area that are difficult to clean at home such as in between the teeth and under the gums. Polishing is important to make sure the surfaces of the teeth are as smooth as possible to ensure bacteria do not stick to the teeth.
  • What is fluoride? This is a substance that increases the strength of your teeth. It works by being sucked into the tooth surface healing very small holes and minimising the risk of tooth decay. At Gatton Dental we always recommend extra fluoride to patients who are at a high or medium risk of tooth decay. You can never have too much fluoride!
  • Why do I need fissure sealants? Fissure sealants are not needed by everyone. They are white fillings used to block out the grooves in adult teeth. By blocking out the deep grooves and creating a smooth surface it is easy to clean the teeth and ensure bacteria do not stick to the teeth. This reduces the risk of tooth decay significantly.
  • Why do my gums bleed? Bleeding gums are usually caused by harmful bacteria hanging under the gums. Professional cleaning followed by good brushing and interdental cleaning will ensure that the gums do not bleed.
  • What causes bad breath? Bad breath can be caused by gases in the stomach from specific foods or in most cases from gum disease. To manage bad breath the dentists at Gatton Dental will perform bad breath tests to determine what the cause is and then recommend treatment or medication.
  • What drugs can cause dry mouth? Dry mouth can be caused by a lack of saliva from drugs such as beta blockers (used to control high blood pressure), mood altering drugs and diuretics. If you suffer from dry mouth your dentist at Gatton Dental may provide a fluoride prescription to make your teeth stronger and reduce your risk of tooth decay as well as give you some advice to promote saliva flow. Saliva is important as it acts as a buffer on the teeth making it harder for bacteria to cause damage.
  • Health insurance: what is a preferred provider? A preferred provider is a dentist who has a link with a health fund. This link means that the dentist cannot charge over the maximum fees set by the health fund.
  • Health insurance: what is a preferred provider price guarantee? Dentists at Gatton Dental offer a preferred provider price guarantee. This means that although we do not have a link with all the health funds we promise to not charge more than a practice that does have a link with the health fund. This means you get the best price.
